Shocking video captures a wildfire that has spread out of control and covered hundreds of thousands of acres.

The devastating Cameron Peak Fire, which started on August 13, tripled in size under record-high hot and dry conditions in the northern part of Colorado, the US – and has become the biggest ever blaze in the state’s history.

It grew to over 187,000 acres as of Saturday, October 17, mostly fuelled by strong winds and dry conditions.

Video taken by a local resident shows a huge plume of dark smoke filling up the sky for miles.

The winds push billowing plumes of smoke over the town of Fraser, transforming day into night beneath the eerily dark cloud.

As he pans the camera across, crystal-clear blue skies are visible in other areas.

Thousands of residents were told to evacuate as more homes were threatened by the blaze.

The smoke brought about degraded air quality in the affected areas.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced: “If visibility is less than five miles in your neighborhood, the smoke has reached levels that are unhealthy.

A National Weather Service radar indicated the Cameron Peak Fire’s smoke plume had towered to more than 16,000 feet high.

Viewers commented on social media and urged the public to stay safe.

One wrote: “Damn, we need rain badly.”

Another said: “This is horrible. Looks like a huge wave in the sky.”

The Cameron Peak Fire comes during a devastating year for wildfires in the west of the US, including the August Complex Fire in California, the state’s largest ever.

The National Interagency Coordination Center said on Saturday that there are 29 large, “uncontained” wildfires burning in the US.
