Raheem Sterling became the first player to win 20 penalties in Premier League history, with the Manchester City winger scoring another spot-kick against Fulham.

Direct acceleration and quick feet have always been part of the attacking arsenal of the England international and those attributes allow him to draw defenders in risky areas of the field to make ill-advised challenges.

Since 2015, with Liverpool having handed him a big break before that, City has benefited from Sterling’s wing action.

It was at the Etihad Stadium that the 25-year-old became one of English football’s most destructive forwards.

With over 100 goals registered for City in 256 appearances, Pep Guardiola has brought the best out of Sterling.

The most recent of those was his latest outing, with the Blues taking just five minutes to break the deadlock at Fulham’s home.

Before reaching the back of the net, Sterling had already squandered a decent chance, and in the 26th minute, he was then involved in City’s second, with Joachim Andersen hanging out a leg inside the box.

The referee pointed to the spot and Sterling took a tumble, allowing Kevin De Bruyne to convert from 12 yards.

In the Premier League, he has now won more penalties than any other player, with Leicester striker Jamie Vardy (19) taking the second position.

On the penalty-winning list, Wilfried Zaha is seventh, with the Crystal Palace winger receiving 16 in his career to date.

Alan Shearer, the Newcastle legend, landed 15, and former Palace frontman Andrew Johnson landed 14.

Throughout his spell at Liverpool, Luis Suarez was awarded 13, with Gabriel Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey able to equal the count.

Sterling would think he has a lot more left in him with a popular spot likely to remain his for the near future at City.

However, questions continue to be raised about his penchant for going down at the slightest touch.

Ex-England and Liverpool striker Michael Owen, having admitted to engaging in the occasional bout of theatrics himself, is among those who believe something needs to be done to fight simulation.
