Following the death of the former Reds and Aston Villa manager, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard paid Gerard Houllier an emotional tribute.

Houllier died at the age of 73 just days after heart surgery, with tributes coming from around the world of football.

In 2003, before leaving a year later, Houllier appointed Gerrard as Liverpool captain, with the midfielder helping the Anfield outfit win the 2005 Champions League and being one of the best to grace the Premier League.

Gerrard has now switched to management, impressing the Scottish Premiership giants Rangers while in charge.

Gerrard has previously cited Houllier’s impact as a cornerstone to his coaching career, and to remember the Frenchman, he took to social media.

Gerrard wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of the pair embracing, “Devastated to hear the news my former manager Gerard Houllier has passed away,”

“I will never forget what this man has done for me and my career. Rest in peace Boss.”

Houllier, who also managed PSG and Lyon as well as a stint as manager of France, praised the potential of Gerrard.

He wrote in 2015: “He is the one player that stands out throughout my career from a personal as well as a professional point of view.”

Maybe he’s going to have one or two years in America now, and I see him remaining in football after that.

To be a good coach, he has all the ingredients, but obviously he needs to go through his preparation and qualifications. I can see him returning to Liverpool several years from now.

I’ve read Steven telling me somewhere that he was the player he was thanks to Gérard Houllier. Not a lot of people would say that and I was very proud of it.

“We had a close relationship, not only with the captain and coach, but I was very attentive to his growth.”
