As scores from Kingsley Coman, Robert Lewandowski and Douglas Costa sealed a 3-1 victory over Stuttgart on Saturday, Bayern Munich returns to winning ways in the Bundesliga.

Last weekend, the champions were taken to a 1-1 draw by Werder Bremen and while regular service was restored at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, against Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side, they did not have it all their own way.

Stuttgart could easily have added halfway through the first half to Tanguy Coulibaly’s opener, but the men of Hansi Flick powered back to win full points from Coman and Lewandowski’s fine strikes before the break and a late third from Douglas.

The outcome means that after Borussia Dortmund lost points at home to Cologne, Bayern took 26 of their last 29 top-flight games and helped them open a two-point advantage at the Bundesliga summit.

When Manuel Neuer struggled to cut out Silas Wamangituka’s low cross, Bayern, who hit the post through Lewandowksi after three minutes, fell behind in the 20th minute, enabling Coulibaly to slot home his first-ever professional goal.

Philipp Forster shortly after, clipping barely past the post from near range and then shooting straight at Neuer after being played clean through, twice came close to extending the hosts’ lead.

These misses returned to torment Stuttgart, with Bayern drawing level seven minutes before the interval when after a fluid counter-attacking pass, Coman tucked into the bottom-left corner.

After Coulibaly had fouled Neuer before Lewandowski put Bayern up in first-half stoppage time, Forster then had an effort thrown out the Poland international drilling past Gregor Kobel from just outside the penalty box.

After the restart, the game slowed down significantly, with the next sight of the goal not arriving until the 72nd minute when the attempt by Orel Mangala was narrowly deflected.

Then Waldemar Anton and Mateo Klimowicz went tight for Stuttgart, but Douglas sealed a 19th victory over their hosts in 20 games for Bayern three minutes from time, clipping from 15 yards into the bottom corner for his first goal since returning to the club on Juventus loan.

And what is next?

After sealing their advancement to the last 16 as Group A winners against Salzburg in midweek, Flick is expected to rest some of his star names for Tuesday’s Champions League visit to Atletico Madrid. They then host RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday, with Stuttgart traveling a day later to Werder Bremen.
