According to reports, a Thai monk chopped off his own head as an offering to Buddha, hoping to be reincarnated as a “higher spiritual being.”

Thammakorn Wangpreecha, 68, was said to have spent more than five years preparing the strange ritual sacrifice before his death.

Making the offering to the deity, the monk believed, would bring him good luck in the afterlife, a belief known in Buddhism as making merit.’

On April 15, the monk was discovered dead at the Wat Phu Hin temple in Nong Bua Lamphu province, northeast Thailand.

Booncherd Boonrod, the nephew who found the body, said his intentions were revealed in a note.

Booncherd said: ‘In the letter, it was reported that chopping his head off was his way of praising Buddha. He said in the letter that he had been preparing this for five years.

‘His dream was to give his head and soul in order for the Lord to assist him in reincarnating as a higher spiritual being in the next life.’

According to reports, the monk reportedly used a makeshift guillotine next to a Buddhist God statue to make it look as if the religious figure was holding his head after it had been severed.

The monk, who had served the temple for 11 years, reportedly told the other priests he was leaving the monkhood but did not tell them about the guillotine.

More than 300 local devotees reportedly turned up at the temple after his death to prepare his body for a rite.

According to Mail Online, the monk’s body was put in a coffin and his head was placed in a jar until his followers and family members took his remains to the forest, where they were burned.

‘He had been preparing this for five years now,’ Yu, one of the monk’s followers, said. He achieved his objective and attained enlightenment.’
