Ander Herrera has slammed the Super League plans that his Paris Saint-Germain employers oppose, accusing “the rich” of tarnishing “the best most beautiful sport on the planet.”

A group of top European clubs has announced their intention to form their own breakaway tournament, allowing them to compete at the highest level among themselves.

Six English clubs have signed up to the plans, along with three from Spain and as many from Italy, but PSG has joined forces with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to avoid a contentious and potentially damaging project.

Herrera, a Spain international who has spent many years competing at the highest level in the world, has posted on social media: “I fell in love with popular football, with fan football, with the fantasy of watching my favorite team compete against the best.

“If this European Super League succeeds, those dreams will be dashed, and the fans of teams that aren’t giants will lose faith in their teams’ ability to win on the field in the most prestigious competitions.

“I love football and can’t keep quiet about it. I believe in a better Champions League, but not in the wealthy stealing what the people have made, which is the world’s most beautiful sport.”

UEFA and FIFA, among others, have expressed their opposition to the proposals, while fans around the world have been quick to condemn the teams and owners at the center of the much-publicized reform.

On Twitter, World Cup winner Mesut Ozil stated: “Kids grow up dreaming of winning the World Cup and the Champions League – not any Super League.”

“One of the things that make major games so enjoyable is that they only happen once or twice a year, not every week.” For all football fans out there, this is extremely difficult to comprehend…”

Another former player, Lukas Podolski, has expressed his displeasure, with his former employers Arsenal and Inter among those who have signed up for the Super League.
