Thiago Alcantara will be out until 2021 as his Knee injury persist

3 Liverpool Training Session

The rehab of Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara from a knee issue is expected to hold him out until next year – reports Dailystar.

Since last month’s Merseyside derby, the Spanish international has not appeared when he was hurt in a tackle that saw Everton forward Richarlison sent off.

The new signing is not yet able to join in practices though he has practiced on a few occasions and it is known that it will be early January before he is fit to play.

There was no setback, though and no operation was required, but it meant that Thiago played just 45 minutes at Chelsea and 90 minutes against Everton.

“Thiago we have to maybe clarify it a little bit,” said manager Jurgen Klopp.

“There was another bad injury (to Virgil van Dijk) on that day when Thiago got hurt in the challenge in the Everton game, and after the scans, it was like one was really bad news and the other one was really good news because nothing was fractured, nothing was broken and stuff like this.”

But as we know now the effect on the knee was still huge. The dilemma is that nothing is fractured and nothing is broken in a situation like that and that means everybody says,’ Well you should go in a few days,’ but the damage on the leg was so significant that it’s really not OK.

It’s not huge, because he trains from time to time, not from time to time, so we just need to understand that we need to take a few more moves.

“I can’t say exactly when he will be fine, but it will take a few weeks still with Thiago.”

Klopp will have to juggle his scarce resources again – midfielder Naby Keita has a chance to be prepared, but for Ajax’s Champions League visit, Trent Alexander-Arnold is still a little way from being ready.

By way of a better head-to-head against both the Dutch side and Atalanta, a draw would be enough for Liverpool to qualify for the knockout stage, and mean that the match next month against Midtjylland will be of less importance and Klopp could rest players.

“I actually don’t see it in that perspective. That would mean I could count on the points already,” Klopp said.

We’re coping with the problem as it is. Three points will be fantastic, completely great because it’s so evident that it would greatly benefit us so I didn’t think I would have to say it.

“It is an important game against a really good team, that’s the way we want to approach it.”
