In a win over Newcastle on Saturday, the striker found himself among the targets, but this term was far from his prolific best.

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang acknowledges that this season he has been “struggling a lot” to reproduce his best form, but believes that after a disappointing start to the 2020-21 campaign, he has the resources and mentality to turn things around as the Gunners look to climb the Premier League table.

The Gabon international had been Arsenal’s go-to man for goals since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2018, being prolific enough for the club to give him the skipper’s armband and a long-term contract as the north London side aim to usher in a new era of success.

This word, however, by his own admission, Aubameyang has struggled to live up to his own high expectations but has told fans that he continues to give his all for the cause and believes he has what it takes to re-establish himself as the top striker of Mikel Arteta.

The 31-year-old said to Sky Sports: “I have been struggling a lot since the beginning of this season, but I think this is part of football.”

“Because it was really important for the club, we gave a lot at the end of the season to win the FA Cup and qualify for the Europa League.

You have ups and downs sometimes and you have to handle them as well as you can. I tried my best and it wasn’t my best show so far.

“I’m confident, even. I can turn this around, I guess.

A self-confessed “quiet, cool and calm” personality behind the scenes, the forward acknowledged that it was difficult for his team-mates to be a leader at a time when his individual performances were sub-standard.

“It’s really difficult to manage both, but because the team needs you, you have to be as positive as you can,” the former Dortmund man added. Not only on the field but also in the dressing room for the guys, I still try to give my best.

“It’s difficult sometimes and maybe you’re not in the right mood, but you have to find a way to change it and give the boys positive vibes.”

However, having won four games on the bounce now, a victory against Crystal Palace on Thursday will provide additional momentum for an outfit seeking European football qualification next season, and Aubameyang feels that the tide could turn at the Emirates.
