Via a major new research program despite concerns of a third spike, teens will be tested for coronavirus.

Emergency teams are being deployed to swab pupils at secondary schools in the southeast of England.

As officials fear the capital is to be plunged into Tier 3, youths in Essex, Kent and London are to have rapid tests.

The drastic move will cause pubs and restaurants before Christmas to close again and potentially ruin millions of people’s New Year plans.

As Welsh colleagues told teachers to turn to online learning, Health Secretary Matt Hancock promised to keep schools open this week.

Matt Hancock had said “by far” the fastest rise in coronavirus infection rates in the southeast was in 11 to 18-year-olds.

Mr. Hancock said, “We have to do everything we can now to stop the spread of school-age children.”

Speaking at a press briefing, Mr. Hancock said the government was “particularly concerned” about coronavirus cases in parts of London, Kent, and Essex, which were rising and were often “already high”.

He said the government must not wait until the next review on December 16 of the tiered constraints, but must “take targeted action immediately”

Mr. Hancock said “in particular” there was a “very high rise” among the secondary school age group and specifically in north-east London, while the rate among adults in London was “broadly flat”.

“We know from past experience that a sharp rise in case in younger people can cause an increase among more vulnerable age groups later.” he said.

The seven worst-hit boroughs in London and parts of Essex and Kent will be sent to mobile research teams.

The crackdown occurred as the deaths of Covid increased by 516 in Britain. A total of 63,082 individuals have now died.

Yesterday, 20,964 infections were also reported, the biggest daily increase in three weeks, taking the total to 1,787,783.

In order to stop spreading the killer virus, Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said he was very “concerned” at the rocketing rates and advised the country to be very very sensible.”

“He said It is not inevitable for a third wave.

“But everybody, all of us, coming together and deciding we want to try to stick to the guidance that’s there is the way we prevent it.”

Swale, in Kent, Basildon in Essex, along with Gravesham, Thanet, and Maidstone, all in Kent, are currently the largest infection rates in England.

It comes after one of the London MPs said, “London will almost definitely go to Tier 3.”
