Lucas Torreira, an Arsenal midfielder, has stated his intention to leave the club and join Boca Juniors.

The 25-year-old is on loan at Atletico Madrid for the 2020-21 season, but Diego Simeone’s side has only used him sparingly, with the majority of his appearances coming off the bench.

Torreira does not believe he has a future at Emirates Stadium and has expressed his desire to join Argentina on a loan deal due to the financial difficulties that a permanent transfer would entail.

“I want to go to Boca Juniors now,” the Uruguayan international told YouTube channel Perfil Bulos. “I am 25 years old and I know it’s a club that plays for great goals.”

“I’d like to please the fans, but I realize it’s not easy. Boca should be able to work out a one-year loan deal with Arsenal.”

Why does he want to leave?

Torreira joined Arsenal from Sampdoria in 2018, and he quickly established himself as a key player at Emirates Stadium, making 50 appearances in his first season.

During the 2019-20 Premier League season, however, he only made 17 starts due to an ankle injury sustained in an FA Cup win over Portsmouth in March 2020, which hampered his progress.

Torreira was released by Mikel Arteta as part of a £45 million ($62 million) deal to bring Thomas Partey to the Spanish club on a season-long loan.

Torreira stated in an emotional interview with ESPN Argentina in early April that he intended to leave Europe and join Boca Juniors in order to be closer to his family following the death of his mother.

He has now expressed his intention to return to South America, but it is uncertain if Arteta and Arsenal will assist him in doing so.
