When Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-min got the goals in a 2-0 win over Brentford, Tottenham booked a spot in the EFL Cup final.

The promotion-chasers of Thomas Frank’s Championship came into the match backed by a 16-match unbeaten streak and victories in this season’s competition over four other Premier League teams, but Sissoko’s 12th-minute header punctured any early excitement.

In their normal eloquent manner, the visitors raised enough questions about Spurs and Ivan Toney had a 63rd-minute header disallowed for offside.

Son then streaked away from their defense to hammer home his season’s 16th goal and grant his new silverware shot to Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho.

Brentford finished with ten men after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg captured Josh Dasilva’s ugly lunge.

By giving Sissoko far too much space to look home at Sergio Reguilon’s left-wing cross in the first half with few chances, they had given themselves an uphill task.

Though Hugo Lloris was equal to a looping header, Toney outmuscled Davinson Sanchez to get on the end of Bryan Mbeumo’s floated 34-minute delivery.

When Lucas Moura’s header from Son’s corner skipped off Toney, with David Raya saving superbly as he skidded backward to his left, the Brentford striker potentially caused his own goalkeeper more pain.

After Mbeumo got the best of Sanchez five minutes into the second half, Serge Aurier made an important last-ditch challenge to thwart Toney.

Aurier and Son spurned presentable prospects, and Toney felt that he had equalized for Brentford, only to demonstrate that he was fractionally offside for a VAR analysis.

From their second half torpor, the near shave roused Spurs and Harry Kane combined with Tanguy Ndombele for the latter to slide Son through for an emphatic end.

That strike sapped a spirited Brentford and needed another impressive intervention from Raya to stop Kane from adding more gloss to the scoreline.

After leaving Hojbjerg with an awful gash on his shin, Dasilva was deservingly discharged six minutes from time.
