Son Heung-min hit and as Tottenham beat Manchester City, Giovani Lo Celso netted 35 seconds after coming on as a substitute.

After strikes from Son Heung-min, Tottenham climbed top of the Premier League and Giovani Lo Celso secured them a 2-0 win over Manchester City.

With a second straight victory over old foe Guardiola, who intended to mark his new deal with a winning outcome but has now lost all three of his games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Jose Mourinho marked a year in charge of Spurs.

After five minutes on Saturday, Son converted a Tanguy Ndombele pass and Mourinho’s men, who spent most of the intervening time on the back foot, sealed the victory when Lo Celso beat Ederson with 25 minutes left.

For City, Aymeric Laporte had a first-half goal ruled out and now they are eight points behind Spurs, who finished Chelsea’s short stint at the top of the league.

Spurs made an outstanding start when Son, who beat the offside trap and took one touch with his right foot before sending a cool finish with his left through the legs of an onrushing Ederson, was found by a lofted ball from Ndombele.

After a brilliant pass involving Sibling, Harry Kane had the ball in the net, only to be thwarted by an offside flag.

City managed proceedings with Ferran Torres, Rodri and Ruben Dias, apart from certain accidents, both forcing regular saves from Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

After 27 minutes as Laporte fired in the visitors believed they had levelled the game, only for referee Mike Dean to reverse the goal after viewing the camera, having discovered that Gabriel Jesus handled Rodri’s cross before moving to the defender.

Before a quick Spurs counter-attack saw Kane thread a pass to Lo Celso, the substitute reaching a fine left-footed finish beyond Ederson just 35 seconds after replacing Ndombele, City proceeded to probe without producing a notable opening.

With 18 minutes remaining, Guardiola put on the England pair Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling, but Lloris saved late from Dias as Spurs kept on to a memorable win with the same scoreline as they claimed this fixture in February.

And what is next?

On Thursday, before a big top-of-the-table clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Tottenham host Ludogorets in the Europa League. City is looking to bounce back in Greece when Olympiacos play in the Champions League on Wednesday and return to Burnley’s top-flight action at home three days later.
