Truck Hits Twenty Cyclists’ Group, Killing Five in Nevada

nevada incident

After a truck ploughed into a group of 20 cyclists in Nevada, five individuals were killed and four others were wounded.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the crash happened on Thursday morning on an open stretch of U.S. 95 south of Boulder City.

The cycling group went on a ride together to mark the retirement of one member.

“It doesn’t appear to be impairment. It appears to be a tragic accident.”,  NHP spokesman told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

The group had an escort vehicle driving behind them with lights blinking, according to Buratczuk.

Many members of the party, however, fell behind the vehicle to protect themselves from strong winds that had picked up.

That is when, for reasons as yet unclear, the truck crossed into the bike path.

The box truck crashed into the escort car and through the back of the party.

At the scene, four men and one woman were killed. Four more people, including the escort vehicle’s driver, were wounded and rushed to a hospital, one of them are in serious condition by helicopter.

The truck driver was not hurt and as police investigated, stayed at the scene.

Clay Weeks, an employee at the Pro Cyclery bike shop, told the publication that the close-knit and very experienced community was very familiar with the route, having traveled it many times before together and that there were no apparent dangers to the stretch of road.

“That shoulder on the side of that highway is wide enough to fit three cars,” he said.

“We don’t really know how somebody managed to get that far off the road. These were all very very experienced cyclists. It’s not like they accidentally rode off and into the road.”

“These are people who ride 10,000 miles a year. Some race professionally,” Weeks said. “How did something like this mistakenly happen?”
