Until the conclusion of his trial, Court remands Maina at Kuje Correctional Center

Judge Okon Abang of the Federal High Court of Abuja ordered Abdulrasheed Maina to be held at the Kuje Correctional Centre before the end of his trial.

Maina, who was extradited to Nigeria from the Nigerian Republic on Thursday 3 December, was brought before the court this morning by a joint team of police officers and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission operatives (EFCC).

Maina, who along with his business, Popular Input Ltd, is being tried for money laundering by the EFCC, was found by the court to have jumped bail when he unexpectedly stopped attending the trial for over a month now.

Subsequently, the court revoked the bail granted to him, issued a bench warrant for his arrest, and ordered Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume to forfeit the N500 million bail bond he had promised.

Maina was rearrested in Niger on Monday, November 30, and brought back to face trial on Thursday.

Maina’s counsel, Adaji Abel, sought a brief adjournment at the resumed hearing of his case in court on Friday 4 December to allow him to review the details of the case.

The application was approved by Justice Abang on the basis that the defendant, who is presumed innocent, has the right to legal counsel.
