US Elections: Germany, France, EU, and Hungary all react to US electoral dilemma while UK stays silent

As Donald Trump’s threats of legal challenges mount against the campaign of Joe Biden because of the alleged charges of ‘electoral fraud’ by the US president in states such as Arizona, Pennsylvania and Michigan, the German governors have urged the US leader to refrain from pouring oil on the flames of an already tense electoral situation.

“Trump has already sent his team of lawyers to fight Pennsylvania and Arizona’s ground states and has reportedly told his aides that he would not admit because he has been” stolen from the election.

His campaign alleges that Pennsylvania’s Democrat-controlled electoral officials have used votes from dead people and double votes to clear his lead against Biden.

While the UK government has declined to wade into the US electoral situation that could see Biden win the election, but Trump refuses to vacate office, Germany has urged Trump to put an end to his argument that the American election was fraudulent, urging the president and his supporters to avoid “pouring oil” on the volatile situation in the US and noting that “decent losers” were important to preserving democracy.

Heiko Maas, the German Foreign Minister, said: “America is more than a one-man display.” Anyone in a scenario like this that continues to pour oil on the fire is behaving irresponsibly. Now is the time to maintain a calm head before there is an objectively decided outcome available.

In order for the outcome to be approved, which has not been decided yet, everyone must first show restraint. Decent losers are more important than radiant winners to the functioning of a democracy.

Maas said he expected that “the USA will possibly not return to the international stage with maximum energy for the time being” until the election outcome has been resolved, but he added: “The world needs the USA as a force for order, not as a factor of turmoil.”

If Trump refuses to concede defeat and Biden declares victory, the UK will face a dilemma, as it is customary for the UK to congratulate the victor.

UK reports suggest Britain will continue to stay silent on the subject until all the Trump campaign’s legal challenges are exhausted.

David Lammy, the UK shadow justice minister, said: “The absence of Boris Johnson and Dominic Raab as Donald Trump continues to weaken the right of the American people to free and fair elections is a national embarrassment.” We need to have the confidence to stand up for democracy, no matter who threatens it. No exceptions at all.’

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said he believed in the US institutions validating the outcome, adding that even if Biden was elected, the US and EU would ‘not return to the prevailing status of a kind of good old days in the transatlantic relationship.’ In four years, the planet has moved. Instead of relying on US help, Europe is trying to become a force unto itself.

In terms of the tension and the size of the turnout, he described the US election as’ a historic vote.’

In his own remarks on Friday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán indicated that the US will not be in a position after this election to send other countries a lecture on democracy.

If things were going to happen in Hungary, like over there, then here, I don’t know, the sky will collapse. It’s unbelievable,’ said the chief of Hungary.
