US vice president, Mike Pence will be attending Joe Biden inauguration

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence will attend President-elect Joe Biden’s inaugural ceremony.

On Saturday, multiple media outlets quoted senior administration officials as saying that Pence, who was forced to take refuge from the US Capitol intruders during the riot, planned to attend the inauguration of Biden on January 20.

The news of the intention of Pence to watch President-elect Joe Biden personally take his oath of office comes after the relationship between Pence and Trump collapsed when the Vice President defied the President by fulfilling his constitutional obligation to certify the results of the election and officially declared the victory of Biden.

During a joint session of Congress at the US Capitol last Wednesday, Pence had faced immense pressure from Trump to avoid the ceremonial vote counting.

A crowd later marched on the US Capitol, where Pence presided over the counting of the results of the Electoral College, forcing him and other representatives to flee the chamber when the pro-Trump rioters infiltrated the house, causing five people to die.

On Friday, Joe Biden said that he was delighted that Pence would be attending his inauguration.

“He’s welcome. I think it’s important that as much as we can stick to what have been the historical precedents of how an administration changes should be maintained. And so Mike, the vice president, is welcome to come. We’d be honored to have him there, and to move forward in the transition,” Biden said.

Before his account was permanently suspended, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he would not attend.

Biden said that ‘one of the few things he and I have ever decided on’ is Trump’s decision to miss his inauguration.

“It’s a good thing, him not turning up,” Biden told reporters Friday at a news conference in Wilmington, Delaware, after announcing Cabinet nominees.

“He exceeded even my worst notions about him. He’s been an embarrassment to the country, embarrassed us around the world. He’s not worthy to hold that office,” said Biden.
