Villagers armed themselves with bamboo sticks and slingshots to fight off an army of rampaging monkeys stealing food.

Locals in the Saharsa district, 230km from Patna in the Indian state of Bihar, were forced to protect food in their kitchens and grains from the fields from the rioting fiends.

Villagers say the invading animals are wreaking havoc by coming into their kitchens, tearing clothes being dried on their roof, breaking tiles of mud houses and even destroying standing crops in fields.

It is said to be a major issue in upcoming local elections with people claiming no politician has taken their problem seriously, the Gulf News reports.

People have therefore been trying to deal with the monkey menace by themselves.

They have been guarding their crops and houses in shifts to save their properties from getting destroyed by the creatures who run amok in a group of 40 to 50 all the time.

Every house in Saharsa has either slingshots or bamboo sticks to drive the monkeys away.

Local Ashutosh Jha said: “We were cheated in every election by the candidates who never bothered to look at our condition after getting our votes.

“But, now we have decided to vote for only those candidates who free us from the menace of monkeys.

“The problem is that we can’t kill these monkeys due to the Wildlife Act which acts as their shields.”

According to locals, there are more than 50 villages in the area affected by the monkey problem with 10,000 farmers on the receiving end of their antics.

Local Lalitesh Mishra said: “Monkeys have robbed us of our peace and properties in the past two decades.

“They not only invade our homes and run away with valuables but also have been destroying our standing crops such as paddy, wheat, maize.

“The situation is such that we have to remain attentive all the time.”
