As the Spaniard takes a weakened team to Old Trafford on Wednesday, six players have been reported positive for Covid-19.

Due to an outbreak of Covid-19, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stated his team “don’t have many players” eligible to face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

After a number of players and employees tested positive for coronavirus, City saw their match against Everton postponed last week, but they were able to face Chelsea on Sunday in a match they won 3-1.

Recently, the club had six players test positive, with Gabriel Jesus, Kyle Walker, and Eric Garcia reporting that they had the virus with three unidentified players.

Guardiola has revealed that the virus has taken its toll on his squad in advance of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final against their fierce local rivals.

“We don’t have that many players,” He told Sky Sports. It’s okay to play one, two games, but if maintained for a long time – and you can only use 14 or 15 players – it’s going to be harder.

Still, like anyone else in the world, we have to adapt as much as possible to our lives and our careers. We don’t have an alternative.

“The important thing is the guys who have Covid recover well and the others try to avoid it as much as possible.”

However, not every City player has been vigilant regarding risk avoidance. On Sunday, the club issued a statement condemning the actions of Benjamin Mendy, who flouted the rules of Covid-19 to host a party for New Year’s Eve.

“While it is acknowledged that elements of this occurrence have been misconstrued in the reports and that the player has publicly apologized for his error, the club is saddened to learn of the misdeed and will be conducting an independent inquiry,” the statement read.

The breach came during a time in which 40 players tested positive for the virus across the Premier League, a new weekly record. Guardiola knows the City is far from the only side affected as Covid-19 surges through England.
