‘We will never again permit another violent #EndSARS protest,’ says IGP Adamu

Adamu Mohammed, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), says the force will never again allow another form of #EndSARS protest to move ahead.

This was confirmed by the police chief when he spoke at a meeting with the police commissioners in Abuja on November 27. He said the force is ready to meet everyone around the country who organizes or engages in such demonstrations.

Know, that our constitution does not accept violent demonstrations, but those people who are trying to come up with another rally are expected to re-think whether they’ve organized it to be violent, otherwise we’re ready to face them.

We’re never going to authorize this sort of #EndSARS protest again. It’s been aggressive. In our constitution, nonviolent dissent is tolerated. We provided security for them as this transition began peacefully. We moved with them to make sure no group of people molested them and it went well before it became aggressive.

They then threatened the civilians, who were also giving them security, until it became violent. So in this country, we will never permit any violent demonstration again. When you speak of peaceful demonstrations, yes, violent protests are tolerated, but never!

We’re trying to shield this nation from hoodlums. We want to shield this country from abuse, and we want every Nigerian to collaborate with us to stop what happened after the end of SARS, in terms of the devastation of public property, the loss of life, the undermining of individual companies, the destruction of corporate institutions.

Well-meaning Nigerians should join us in order to avoid such a recurrence. We’ve made a lot of arrests of people leaving jails. In Kano and Kaduna, others were also detained. When they fled, some of them returned to their robbery business, he said
