Why I sacked Emir Sanusi as the Emir of Kano – Gov Ganduje explains

duje 1

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has given reasons why, as the Emir of Kano, he dethroned former CBN Governor Alhaji Muhammadu Lamido Sanusi.

Recall that the expulsion of Emir Sanusi was confirmed by the Kano State Secretary to the Government, Usman Alhaji, on March 9, 2020, who claimed that he disregarded the lawful orders of the governor’s office and the lawful authorities.

The monarch of Kano was also accused of persistently refusing to attend official meetings and programs arranged without any acceptable excuse by the government.

While speaking today, December 15, at the presentation of a book on former President Goodluck Johnathan, written by journalist Bonaventure Philips Melah, Governor Ganduje said that at the time he was named in June 2014, Sanusi was not the best man for the throne.

Sanusi was chosen, according to him in spite of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Recall that the appointment of Sanusi as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was terminated by former President Jonathan in April 2014, after Sanusi claimed that $49 billion had been looted by some of the people under the Jonathan administration.

At the presentation of the book, Ganduje said that Sanusi should have taken a more civil approach to deal with the matter by meeting the former president in private to discuss it and not making such an allegation in public.

In sacking Sanusi as CBN Governor, Jonathan took a bold move, which generated bad blood in some circles. When Sanusi said that Jonathan’s government lost $49 billion, I said in my mind that no you should speak to him (Jonathan) privately.

You should have given him this hint, and then he’d know how to investigate before he could find a way to conceal the money from anyone who took the money.

The declaration, I said, was not honourable in my opinion. Bad blood was created by that comment.

Sanusi was appointed Emir of Kano barely two months after his sack, which according to Ganduje, he was not worthy of as he was not the best man for the throne.

He says he doesn’t regret demonizing Sanusi;

Not because he was the best man for the throne, but in revenge for what Jonathan did to him, Sanusi was appointed Emir of Kano.

That was to demonstrate that what Jonathan was doing to him was wrong and that the people of Kano wanted their son to be Emir, so they agreed to nominate him to be Emir.

But when he was chosen, there were a number of protests here and there, with people burning tyres. Yet he was kept on to the stool because of government backing.

When I became governor (you’re going to laugh that way), I said yes, Jonathan’s medicine is an effective medicine.

That medicine will serve the same function, for the same disease and for the same patient, even though I’m not a medical doctor.

So I took my Jonathan medicine and decided to save the system, to save the institution and I applied it effectively. So Jonathan and I are on the same page. Actually, I have no regrets.”, he said.
