TIGER nut has long been used to increase diets, as recorded cases of multiple health-related disorders such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity have reduced dramatically with significant consumption.

In fact, for decades, men have used tiger nuts to treat erectile dysfunction, increase sperm count and improve libido.

Now, researchers in a report on the nutraceutical and benefits of tigernut said its extracts demonstrated marked antimicrobial effects at high concentrations, substantiating its consumption as helpful in the prevention and treatment of urinary tract and bacterial infection.

In a report, researchers noticed that tiger nut extracts of methanol and ethyl acetate exhibited a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity on urinary tract infection (UTI) that triggered bacteria with the highest methanol extract activity reported.

Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumonia were such diseases causing germs.

Both plant extracts showed antimicrobial activity at varying concentrations against the selected microorganisms.

The sensitivity of these isolates to tiger nut extracts and to gentamycin, which was used as a positive control, were compared with each other.

In addition, the evaluation of the composition of antioxidants and vitamins of its various extracts showed that the tiger nut contained a large amount of these vitamins. However, the amounts of these vitamins (A, C, D, and E) in the methanol extract were significantly higher, with vitamin E above the maximum-minimum consumption in all extracts by international guidelines.

The outcome of this study revealed that the intake of tiger nuts, considering the low levels of vitamins A and C in both extracts according to international norms, would lead to fulfilling the daily vitamin requirements as stipulated for healthy adults

The researchers proposed that the presence of chemical constituents, including phenolic compounds and other phytochemicals, could be due to its broad-spectrum antibacterial effect on urinary tract infection-causing bacteria.

Imaobong E. Daniel and Etukudo Edigeal at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom Province, were interested in the 2019 research in the Journal of Agroalimentary Processes and Technologies.

According to them the medicinal value of tiger nut and its large and diverse bioactive compounds of considerable pharmaceutical importance are further confirmed by these findings.

For pharmacological evaluation, however further purification and isolation of the active compounds in these extracts is needed because tiger nuts can be a possible source of a new class of antibiotics.

The tiger nut is widely known as aya in Hausa, ofio in Yoruba and akiausa in Igbo, where three varieties (black, brown and yellow) are grown, botanically called Cyperus esculentus.

Of these, only two varieties are readily available on the market: yellow and brown.

You can eat tiger nut raw, fried, canned, baked, or turn it into a soothing drink called tiger nut milk.

Before they can be consumed, they are usually immersed in water, thereby making them much softer and giving them a stronger texture.

The edible flour derived from its tuber could be superior and could be favorable compared with other flours of tuber crops. It is known to be a very significant food crop with considerable potential for malnutrition control, prevention and elimination.

Tiger nuts are used in ayurvedic medicine for the prevention of flatulence, diarrhea, dysentery, fatigue, and indigestion.

As they contain resistant starch, a type of starch that resists digestion, tiger nuts are also said to act as a mild appetite suppressant.

Because of its high antioxidant vitamin E content, it helps slow down the aging of body cells, improves skin elasticity and decreases skin wrinkles.

Previous studies have indicated that diabetics take tiger nuts mostly for their sucrose and starch and for their high arginine content, which is reported to stimulate insulin development.

They are often known to be useful in practices that decrease cholesterol and as such, are active in colon cancer reduction.

Two varieties of tiger nut tested are very nutritious and have been highly effective in antisickling and enhancing the red blood cells’ oxidant status.
