Wildlife charity begins rescue mission after zoo visitor secretly took pictures of a starving lion at a Zoo in Nigeria

After a tourist found the starving lion and hundreds of under-fed animals at a zoo in Nigeria, a wildlife charity launched a rescue mission to save the life of a critically malnourished male lion.

The man, made the surprising discovery at the Gamji Gate zoo in Kaduna, Nigeria, according to Mail Online.

According to the paper, the man who wanted to remain anonymous charged a one-dollar admission fee to the state-owned zoo where he said he noticed a hungry lion and hundreds of neglected animals.

Speaking to Jam Press, the man said, ‘I felt surprised the first moment I saw the animal. I was really shocked. I felt so anxious and uncomfortable because I was seeing a lion live for the first time.

‘It’s like my first time at a zoo. I’ve seen them literally in movies, news and magazines. Many of the animals in the zoo are simply not well-fed. They lack appropriate therapy or let me say malnutrition.’

The man who reported his findings said he immediately approached WildatLife.e. V, the animal welfare charity, to help save the lion, called Zaki.e. V.

With its ribs clearly protruding from its stomach, his video and photographs show the lion looking extremely small.

It is said that WildatLife.e. V operates alongside the Nigerian Zoological Parks Association, which has supported them in locating a wildlife vet and informing the authorities who are urgently investigating the matter.

A spokesperson said:’ The vet was sent and the lion was given veterinary assistance, but he will need more care to be paid for by NGO WildatLife.

We are awaiting the full diagnosis of the veterinarian and reporting on how and why this was allowed to happen.

‘Zaki is seeking medical attention now and it will be an ongoing situation. Our NGO has offered to move him to a sanctuary that will see him prosper if Zaki survives this ordeal.

‘But it is not feasible to move him in his now critical condition, we must work closely with the Nigerian officials to get this matter handled internally.

‘In zoos across the wild, we must avoid the misery that keeps wildlife captive for benefit.’

The lion is the most urgent and surprising case that the NGO has ever seen, they also said.
