Nnenna Egwuagu, 29, of Umulumgbe in Udi L.G.A., was arrested by police officers attached to the Enugu state police command’s 9th Mile Police Division for allegedly administering a noxious substance to her three (3) year old stepson, Wisdom Egwuagu, resulting in his death.
According to ASP Daniel Ndukwe, the state police command’s spokesperson, her husband and the deceased child’s parent, Justine Egwuagu, who reported the incident to the police, the suspect’s unusual behavior towards the child caused the child’s death.
“The suspect admitted to administering the noxious substance to the boy, according to preliminary investigation.” She believed that her actions were motivated by her husband’s inability to provide for her and their daughter, and that she wished for the child to become ill so that he could be treated. The child was pronounced dead in the hospital and his body was taken to the mortuary for an autopsy,” according to the statement.
The noxious substance container and syringe she used to administer the substance to the boy, according to Ndukwe, have been recovered, and a thorough investigation into the case is underway at the State CID, Enugu.
While describing the act as callous and unfortunate, he added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, has urged couples to genuinely love each other, live in peace regardless of the circumstances, and use any legitimate and/or morally appropriate means to overcome their differences.
